FOR PLANET AND PEOPLE

Bethia: Schools go back on Monday and it feels like the first shift towards the end of lockdown life. A light at the end of the tunnel. We hope you’ve enjoyed our ‘LOVE the Earth in lockdown’ series - it’s been so great to hear about all the different pockets of experiences, thoughts and work that people are doing out there! Here are my own ‘LOVE the earth in lockdown’ thoughts:

  1. What have you LEARNT in lockdown?

I really enjoyed David Attenborough’s ‘Perfect Planet’ series (BBC iPlayer). Lockdown for me has been a great opportunity to read more, watch more and learn more. Attenborough goes through all the natural systems that create the perfect conditions for life on earth. The first episodes are awe inspiring, beautiful and full Attenborough’s unique brilliance - clear and informative narration, solid facts and plenty of wakeup calls to act now. The final episode is hard to watch - it’s about humans and how we are altering these natural systems. Attenborough includes the youth voice which I appreciated. The episode has the standard impressive scientist/academic voices (they have much to offer, after all), but he also includes snippets of young voices. Less confident and articulate but with far more personal urgency - they are the ones who are inheriting our mess. This is super exciting and part of the Planet and People vision to support young voices - young people are speaking up.

2. What have you OBSERVED during lockdown?

I love change - I have a short attention span! The British climate is perfect for the sufferer of the short attention span because just as you get used to the view, it changes again. A new season. New plants. New temperatures. New weather. I love it. I have really enjoyed watching winter come to an end and spring emerge. And not for long. Summer will be here in a flash. A whole new view again.

3. What have you been INVOLVED in during lockdown?

Jess and I are the creators of the Planet Action Kit. Every month is a new opportunity to share a message, an idea, something that has inspired us, with our audience (through our subscription boxes, through this blog, through our social media communities and through personal contacts with you). It’s a small drop in the ocean. But I am happy to be a part of it! I am learning so much and becoming so aware of how little I know. I want to know, act and understand more of this perfect planet and the urgent need to act for it’s protection and future.

4. What have you ENJOYED in lockdown?

I have enjoyed time with my kids. Take out that mad dash to get to school on time and swimming lessons and all the ‘extras’ and we’ve been given the gift of time. Time outside has been invaluable too. When we’re all fed up with home learning and being locked inside together, we can put our layers on and brave the elements and it shifts the mood and changes the energy. Everyone calms down, slows down. Getting outside has really helped alleviate the tricky elements of this lockdown.

Have a watch of what our March Planet Action Kit is all about here!
